The Importance of a Preseason Screen

As athletes transition into spring sports, preparation matters.

The start of a new season brings higher training loads, more repetitive movement, and greater physical demands. Whether an athlete is stepping into baseball, softball, track, golf, or lacrosse, the body needs to be ready before competition begins.

That is where a preseason screen becomes valuable.

At TTR, a preseason screen helps us understand how an athlete is moving, where limitations may exist, and what needs to be addressed before the season ramps up. It gives us a clear starting point and allows us to be proactive rather than reactive.

Set a Baseline

Before an athlete can improve performance or build resilience to injury, it is important to know where they currently stand. We use movement assessments and advanced technology to to analyze strength, power, asymmetry and more.

A preseason screen establishes a baseline. It shows how the athlete moves, how well they control positions, and where asymmetries or restrictions may be present. That baseline becomes the foundation for smarter decision-making throughout the season.

Without it, athletes are often guessing.

The baseline measurements can also be used as a tool when we develop return-to-sport plans for athletes after injury. We objectively measure force output, symmetry, and functional capacity before and after care to give us real insight into how the body is performing, not just how it feels. In cases where timelines are tight, VALD testing helps answer critical questions like if an athlete can safely produce force, if there's meaningful side-to-side deficit, or if movement quality is improving under load.

By measuring these factors, we can make more informed, safer recommendations instead of relying on time alone as the primary variable.

Spot Weaknesses Early

Many issues that affect performance do not start as pain, they start as small weaknesses, movement compensations, mobility restrictions, or imbalances that go unnoticed until the body is asked to do more. Once practices and games intensify, those weak points are often what get exposed.

A preseason screen helps identify those areas early, before they turn into bigger problems. From there, we can work on improvements to build resilience to injury during the season and improve performance using real time data.

You Sports, Your Goals, Your Plan

Every sport places unique demands on the body.

A baseball player may need to create and control rotation efficiently. A runner may need strong single-leg stability and force production. A golfer may need mobility, sequencing, and control through the hips and thoracic spine. Preparation should match the demands of the sport.

A preseason screen helps us see what an athlete needs in order to move well, absorb load, recover effectively, and perform with more confidence once the season begins.

One of the biggest benefits of a preseason screen is that it gives direction. At TTR, we don't guess or provide generic recommendations. We assess and measure so we can create a plan built around the individual athlete.

That plan may include mobility work, manual therapy, strength development, recovery strategies, or focused performance goals depending on what the athlete needs most.

We create a custom program for your individual needs to help maximize performance, build resilience to injury, and help the athlete enter the season more prepared, more durable, and better equipped to perform.

Our goal is to define where the athlete wants to go and help get them there.

When athletes understand their starting point, they can set more specific goals around performance, durability, movement quality, and recovery. Instead of simply hoping to stay healthy or perform better, they have a measurable path forward.

When competition intensifies, preparation becomes visible.

The athletes who hold up through the season, recover better, and perform more consistently are often the ones who prepared before the first game, meet, or match ever arrived.

A preseason screen is one of the best ways to start that process.

At TTR, we provide athletes with advanced performance care that helps them prepare with purpose. We assess and measure to create a custom plan for each individual — one that builds durability, addresses weaknesses, and helps keep them performing at a high level all season long.
